"A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green. The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool" (1).
Chapter 1 Summery
The novella begins with an introduction of the setting and characters. It is set during the Great Depression in California by the Salinas River. In chapter one we are introduced to George and Lennie. George is described as short, slender, and short-tempered. George is a parental figure for Lennie. Lennie is described as tall and muscular. Lennie has a mental disability. Because of Lennie's mental disability, he likes to touch soft things which has caused them trouble with the law.
My reaction to chapter one was that I thought George was harsh to Lennie and it was unnecessary for George to act that way towards him. Yet, I don't believe that Lennie isn't as innocent as he may seem to be. I also thought that it was strange that Lennie kept carrying around a dead mouse.
